The chipset (sometimes called the processor or SoC) is the single biggest driver of how a device feels day to day — app launch speed, gaming performance, multitasking, and how warm the device gets under load. Flagship chips like Snapdragon 8 Elite, Dimensity 9000-series, and Apple's A-series and M-series silicon sit at the top; mid-range chips trade some peak performance for better battery efficiency and lower cost. Every device page on gsmfox lists the exact chipset along with CPU core configuration and GPU, so you can see precisely what's inside rather than relying on a marketing name alone.
RAM determines how many apps a device can hold in active memory before it starts reloading them from scratch, which is the difference between switching apps instantly and waiting a beat every time. 6–8GB is comfortable for most people in 2026; heavy multitaskers and gamers benefit from 12GB or more. Storage is simpler: more is better if you shoot a lot of video or keep large offline libraries, and a microSD card slot (still found on plenty of budget and mid-range devices) can make a lower storage tier a non-issue. Screen quality comes down to three things: panel type, resolution, and pixel density (PPI). Megapixel count gets top billing in marketing, but it's only one factor in camera quality — sensor size, aperture, image processing, and optical or sensor-shift stabilization all matter as much or more. A well-tuned 50MP sensor with a larger physical size will typically outperform a 200MP sensor squeezed onto a tiny chip. Wi-Fi standards matter more than most buyers realize — Wi-Fi 6E and Wi-Fi 7 offer meaningfully lower latency and higher throughput on supporting routers — and Bluetooth version affects audio quality and connection stability with wireless earbuds. Instead of a single numeric score that makes every budget device look bad next to a flagship, gsmfox assigns letter grades — A+ down to C, deliberately with no D or F — across Performance, Display, Battery, Camera, Charging, and Software, plus one Overall grade per device.
The key difference from most spec-comparison sites: grades are calculated relative to a device's own market segment — Flagship, Mid-range, or Budget — not against the entire catalog at once. A mid-range phone that punches above its weight can legitimately earn an A+ for excelling within its own segment, the same way a flagship earns its grade by standing out among other flagships. That means a grade actually tells you something useful about where a device sits among its real competitors, instead of just confirming that a $1,200 flagship beats a $200 phone on paper.
Best for gaming: prioritize chipset and RAM above everything else — look for an A or A+ Performance grade, 8GB+ RAM, and a high refresh rate display for smooth frame pacing.
Best for photography: don't chase megapixels alone — check the Camera grade, look for multi-camera setups with a dedicated telephoto or ultrawide lens, and compare selfie camera specs if front-facing quality matters to you.
Best battery life: pair a large mAh capacity with an efficient chipset — our Battery grade already accounts for both, so it's a faster way to shortlist than reading capacity numbers alone.
Best budget picks: filter by Release Year and Display type on the Search page, then sort by Overall grade — a well-graded Budget-segment phone from the last two years often covers everyday use just as well as an aging flagship, for a fraction of the price.

Type Galaxy S3 or Galaxy SIII and both find the Samsung Galaxy S III — Roman numerals are normalised automatically, so you don't need to remember exact capitalisation or formatting. Tablets and smartwatches show up in the same database as phones, but the specs that matter shift a little. For tablets, display size and resolution carry more weight relative to camera quality, and storage matters more since tablets are more often used for media and document work — check whether a tablet supports expandable storage before assuming the base configuration is enough. For smartwatches, battery life is graded on its own scale relative to other watches rather than against phone-scale batteries, since a 400mAh battery that lasts two days on a watch is a very different achievement than the same capacity in a phone. Our grading system reflects this automatically: a watch is only ever compared against other watches, and a tablet's Overall grade is calculated the same way a phone's is, within its own segment.
How often is the database updated? New devices are added on an ongoing basis as they're released, and existing spec sheets are corrected when errors are found — if you spot something wrong on a device page, the underlying data can be fixed and the grade recalculated automatically from the corrected specs.
Do higher grades mean a phone is objectively "better"? A higher grade means a device is stronger across the graded categories relative to its own market segment. It isn't a purchase recommendation on its own — a Budget-segment phone with a B+ grade might still be the right choice over a Flagship A+ device if you don't need flagship-level performance and would rather save the money.
Why don't you show a single overall numeric score anymore? A single 0–100 number invites comparing every device on the site against the same scale, which unfairly penalizes budget and mid-range devices for not being flagships. Letter grades within a device's own segment, plus the full spec sheet underneath, give a more honest picture.
Can I compare a phone against a tablet or a watch? Yes — the Compare tool will show you every spec side by side regardless of device type, though naturally some fields (like camera specs on a watch) may not apply to every device in the comparison, and we note that clearly in the table rather than leaving it blank without explanation.

What if a device I'm looking for isn't listed? The database spans thousands of devices across 126 brands going back to the 1990s, but no catalog this size is ever 100% complete on day one for brand-new releases — very recently announced devices are added as soon as full specifications become available.
Specifications on gsmfox are compiled and structured from manufacturer specification sheets and maintained as a continuously updated database covering phones, tablets, and watches released from the 1990s through today. Grades and the Overall score are calculated automatically from those specifications using a transparent, documented formula — never from user reviews, sponsorships, or manual adjustment — so the same specs always produce the same grade, and every grade can be traced back to the underlying numbers on the device's own page.
